Full Album Stream: She & Him - Volume One

She & Him Acting and playing music don't go together like chocolate and peanut butter. Yet after a few listens to Zooey Deschanel and M. Ward's debut as She & Him we have to question our thespian musician theory. Volume One is actually a surprisingly competent and enjoyable listen that tends toward countrified '70s A.M. gold. It's out today on Merge.

MP3: She & Him - "Why Do You Let Me Stay Here?"

She & Him Here's a first listen to the upcoming Zooey Deschanel and M. Ward project, She & Him. The duo's debut album, Volume 1, features nine Zooey originals and two covers with M. Ward handling the production. Volume 1 drops March 18th via Merge and here's how the whole thing started according to the label:
She & Him is a story of musical serendipity. Zooey Deschanel and M. Ward first met in 2006 for a movie soundtrack project in which they recorded a version of Richard and Linda Thompson’s “When I Get To The Border”. While in the studio, they were immediately struck by one another’s talents and found an instant rapport. During a conversation about their shared love of old records, Zooey let slip that she wrote her own songs, which she recorded alone at home on her computer. Somewhat shy about sharing these musical morsels, she was eventually persuaded to send them to M. He was instantly impressed, and they soon reconvened at his Portland studio to begin work.
We gotta say... It exceeds our expectations. But should we have expected less after that tuneful shower scene from Elf? Remember that one? Will Ferrell plays this retarded guy who thinks he's an elf and he totally lands a honey like Zooey in the end. Heartwarming.

Consider Rook essential summer listening. Like your "Summer Reading" list, Rook isn't really "summer-y" at all. It's heavy, dense, dramatic and beautiful and dark. Four of those five adjectives actually DO apply to summer, come to think of it... - jimtarnation  [READ REVIEW]
